New Pinterest tool lets you add skin color to your search results

@bufferingbetty

Por fin.

Admit it. You’re single and have a secret Pinterest board full of rustic-twinkle light aesthetic that is exactly what you’d want for your dream wedding. Yeah, same. I love scrolling through recipes and beauty looks but, like many media outlets, Pinterest has makes the seeing the representation of people of color like, well, finding a black model on Pinterest. Nearly impossible.

I’m just gonna say it.

Pinterest has been a ‘hail to the size 4 boho white girl whose hair flows long and blonde with summer tanned skin.” In every category. On every mood board. At all times. That is a really tough thing for some people to hear and, the thing is, I’m ok with that. It should make you uncomfortable when you realize that your favorite app to scroll through doesn’t celebrate all people.

What keeps all of us on Pinterest is the fact that it is women celebrating each other.

(And all the organizational tips, right? #virgo4lyfe)

How many times have you shown your hair stylist screenshots of the perfect highlights you saw on Pinterest.

For many of us WOC, seeing how those highlights or that eye shadow color might look with our skin color took a carpal tunnel educing amount of time to find. If you did not explicitly type ‘hair style’ followed by ‘black woman, asian woman, woc,” chances are that you scrolled and scrolled and scrolled and still didn’t find someone with a complexion similar to your own.

I have literally typed in my foundation or concealer shade in order to find women who look like me.

Pinterest did an update this week that POC have been asking for for a long time now.

Look at these tweets as your receipts:

I’ve had this exact conversation with my own sister. We were trying to find some Puerto Rican recipes for the holidays that weren’t created by someone went to La Isla Del Encanto and pinned their watered down version of sancocho.

Search by skin color

After you have entered your search, Pinterest has had a row of suggestions to help narrow your search. Now, por fin, finally, the new feature lets you add a skin color. They have added 4 color wheels to choose from. Pick the color wheel that most closely represents the skin color you are looking for. Here I searched ‘glowy makeup.” As you can see, the default result images are of lighter skinned women.

The row of suggestions still includes the option to add, for example, “Dark Skin,” and “Black Girl” to your search like it did before.

Pinterest is an homage to white girls with blonde hair.

Just look at this search of pretty hairstyle from this morning. Pretty hair according to Pinterest is naturally straighter and on a white woman.

But hopefully this new feature will help up us who don’t fit that mold get some inspo too.

This new feature isn’t all the way there yet. Not all searches include the option to add a skin tone to it. I looked up ‘purple smokey eye’ and the color wheels did not pop up. Instead it was the original way you had to search: waiting for the exclusionary results to then add who you are really looking for.

Why does all of this even matter?

Pinterests search results reinforced our societal flaw that we understand beauty as being in one form. It emphasized that ‘white, thin; blonde’ is the default for beauty. You could argue that that hasn’t changed because you still need to add a skin color instead of there being a natural mix of different women in the search results. I agree. White woman is still the Pinterest default setting. However, adding the 4 color wheels is a step in the right direction.

As a beauty editor, I try to be conscious of the beauty shots I choose to share. Pinterest is one of my most frequented sights when it comes to searching for a specific beauty look. Especially when I draft B. Scopes; meetpepperb.com’s beauty horoscopes. I spend a lot of time trying to find WOC: east and south asian, black, latina. All of us. Women and men with all skin tones but I do my best to focus on medium to darker skin tones. Even after I have chosen “The Look” for the horoscope, If I’m not finding models of different skin colors, I abandon that look and find something new. Even if I REALLY wanted to use that look.

I do this because it would be so very easy to just pick 10 pictures of pretty light skinned women.

Easy because we have been conditioned to recognize beauty through a eurocentric gaze. I refuse to be a partner in encouraging that one standard of beauty. I don’t always get it right. I’ve checked my work and I want more diversity.

I think this is a major improvement to Pinterest but I do hope to eventually see a more a organically diverse search result.

beauty is in All of Us.

NEW BRAND ALERT!: Subtl Beauty

@bufferingbetty

Meet Sublt Beauty.

If you are just taking the crosstown bus or boarding a cross country flight, this product should be on your radar.

Subtl Beauty

At a glance, my first thought was: How are you fitting a whole face in the palm of your hand?!?

Subtl Beauty has eliminated your need for an over sized makeup bag to put in your over sized purse without neglecting your desire to feel and look pretty.

Meet Rachel, founder and CEO of Subtl Beauty.

“I’m not an aspiring #MUA #Influencer or #trendsetter. I’m a woman with career goals, family responsibilities, a social life, and a very real need for portability in my beauty products...This is how the idea of Subtl Beauty came to be. I developed the Subtl Beauty stack to be compact enough to fit in my clutch for my sleepovers, but also big enough to hold full-size products for travel and daily use.” (source)

Rachel is all of us. Sublt Beauty is relatable.

Basics for a face that says, “I’m here!” or, “Where is my coffee, Josh?” or “Brunch is on me!!!”

It is the age of growing beauty brand inclusivity. More brands are pushing themselves to create shades other than medium to dark white girl. It is a mix of the frenzy that sparked from Fenty Beauty jumping off with 40 foundation shades combined with braver influencers being more vocal about not using or promoting brands that have PITIFUL shades ranges.

While there are only 5 shades of concealer available from this brand, I don’t want you to take that as vote against them. Let’s be real, Fenty launched 40 shades because regardless if the products sucked, everyone was going to buy and try them because, one word, Rihanna. They could risk investing all that shade development money. Subtl Beauty literally had a kickstarter campaign to get support. I think this is one of those brands we will find in Target in just a few years if we support just another working woman who had a vision to give other women something the market wasn’t offering them.

Subtl Beauty created a chart to help you find your shade! If we have a similar complexion, I think medium might work for us with a sheered out application! I used the Too Faced Born This Way Concealer in shade Warm Beige. The chart lists the shade Honey as a match for their medium shade. Honey is three shades deeper than my Too Faced shade and described as ‘tan neutral.’ (source)

I’m a huge fan of beauty influencer, Jackie Aina. Like many of us, I’ve watched her apply her concealer a 1000 times. She often uses Nars concealer shade ‘amande’ which is listed as a shade match for Subtl Beauty’s dark concealer. She describes her complexion as dark and often acknowledges that brands tend to stop their complexion shade range right around her skin tone. Unfortunately neglecting an entire group of women ready to make beauty purchases if only they were available to them. If you are deeper than Jackie, you may not have a concealer from Subtl Beauty just yet. I will also say that their Instagram could use a huge serving of diversity not just for the sake of diversity but because anything less is just unacceptable.

Subtl Beauty also has a cute brush available!!

Sublt Beauty basically looked at my makeup bag and was like, “biiiiitch, that is unacceptable! LESS!”

The smooth clean lines and minimalist look of Subtl Beauty will make you look at your own makeup bag and feel like a hoarder.

Here are my essentials for my basic go to makeup look. Stacked, because why not. This excludes mascara, brow gel, and all the cotton swabs I carry to edit my work. plus the two full sized makeup brushes I need to get all of this on my face.

Subtl Beauty gives me that Milk Makeup minimalist feel without all the bulk. While Milk Make up has that ‘so chic, too cool’ vibe, Sublt Beauty has that “CEO + confident in my looks” feeling.

I think the stackable makeup is accessible for makeup wearers at all skill + interest levels. If you are just trying to look + feel better at a morning meeting or on a coffee date, this is perfect to just keep in your bag. You can get ready in your Uber on your way to catch up with some friends, too. Business, casual, date, party. In your small purse!

Simple. Subtl. Beauty.

Is Powder Foundation Making A Comeback?

@bufferingbetty

Will this old school rap be a new school hit?

Have you felt it too? There are changes happening in trends lately. Recent product launches + the looks that have come down the runway are hinting that what has reigned for the past few years may be phasing out.

Brands have been extending their popular foundations ranges to include a powder formulation.

Both Estee Lauder and Maybelline have released powder foundations this year!

With all that being said…

Will powder foundation ever replace the popularity of liquid foundation?
I don’t think so. All makeup application takes practice to master but powders require a little more finessing.

Poor application of powder can age you. Whether you’re 32 years old or 57 years old, there’s a good chance you don’t actually want to look 15 years older than you are.

If you have oily skin, powder foundation can probably be the key to getting that lasting look. Finishes of powder foundations tend to be matte. Matte looks have been getting more attention recently.

Dewy skin elevated to glass skin but maybe that trend is starting to phase out too.

Makeup looks that emerged from Autumn/Winter Fashion week had a mix of dewy, matte, and ‘natural’ finish in complexions. Harper’s Bazaar put together the looks from the week and you can see the full break down here

There is a shift in the beauty industry. Let’s see where it goes!

If you’ve got dry skin and want to give powder foundation a fighting chance, make sure you’ve got a good setting spray on deck!

Are People Really Buying Mini Fridges For Their Skincare?

@bufferingbetty

Trust us. You’ll want one, too.

We are the generation that has everything so we make anything as extra as can be. That does, in fact, include our obsession with skincare. It’s not so much a fear of aging as it is a need to curate the perfect self care evening; first: a glass of wine topped off with a sheet mask; second: scheduling an appointment with our therapists. How else are we supposed to wind down after a yet another day of the government shutdown? Enter our latest indulgent distraction: a mini fridge -yes, for our cosmetics!

Could we technically put our eye creams in the regular size refrigerator in the kitchen? Sure!

But think about all the things that are sitting in your fridge right now. I don’t know -I just don’t feel right about having my favorite eye cream sitting next to a jar of my grandmother’s sofrito. Both are precious but they have no business being in contact with each other.

Plus, think of all the things that have gotten pushed to the back of your fridge only to be found three weeks past its expiration date.

I mean, thank god for packaging and pictures, otherwise you’d have no idea how to identify what is, apparently, pico de gallo. What if that happened to your 24K gold eye gels -lost in the abyss of your fridge because it was hidden behind that weird smoothie you bought and never threw away for you hoped a friend would come over and take it off your hands. It would be tragic.

When I apply my skincare, all I want to focus on is the joy of hydrating my dry skin. Not stress over wondering when was the last time I cleaned out my fridge and if what is in that bowl supposed to be that color.

Yes! There are real skin care benefits to keeping certain beauty products in the fridge. Especially eye cream!

In a perfect world, you’d clear off a shelf in your regular size refrigerator to make a proper place for your moisturizers and aloe gel.

But this is reality and it’s only a matter of time before your roommates or your Mama thinks your Glow Recipe Avocado Melt Sleeping Mask is actually a sandwich spread -sticks a butter knife in it and gets bread crumbs in the jar. Boom! $45 goes down on account of turkey on rye.

So, yeah, we’re getting mini fridges.
And we’re putting them in our little beauty oasis just to feel like we got it like that. So check these out if you’re ready to treat your undereye to the uplifting feeling of cooled eye cream.

Looks like a breadbox but all you’ll find is some moisturizers and maybe some perfume

What I love most is that this little baby sunshine looks like a throwback refrigerator. It’s the cutest damn thing sitting on my vanity, which is actually a presidental style desk that I bought on Craigslist when I graduated college.

My mini is stocked with my moisturizers, sunblock, overnight cream, primer, setting sprays, a scalp treatment, and, of course, some sheet masks!

The first time I applied my skincare after it had been cooled, I was hooked. It’s so satisfying, so cooling! The only thing I need now is some eye gels!

It’s a lifestyle.

Puff, Puff, Mask: Cannabis is a Rising Beauty Trend

Danyelle Valentin // @bufferingbetty

For chronic good skincare *winky face*

We all know the ‘party’ properties of cannabis, even if not from experience. However, many of us, including myself, are or were ignorant of the beauty benefits of it! Cannabis beauty solutions are far from new but they certainly are on trend. Kush Mascara from Milk Makeup and Sephora carrying High Beauty, it looks like CBD should have been on my vanity and in my skincare cabinet ages ago! In addition to improving the skin, having the beauty world have such an emphasis on the healing benefits of marijuana speaks to the social, in my opinion, progression of society. I’m not saying a face cream is going to cause Congress to legalize cannabis, but maybe it will de-stigmatize people and cultures that embrace it.

Homage to the chillest pass time

We be burning not concernin’ while we blending our eye shadow. For me, I noticed the trend really kick off with the launch of this palette. I thought it was funny, socially relevant, and stunning!!! I also LOVE green eye makeup! While this gorgeous palette is not formulated with any cannabis, it is truly a tribute to plant.

The Trend Intensifies

Mascara is that one beauty step that, according to me, 9 out of 10 makeup wearers wouldn’t skip. Milk Makeup comes across as the brand that caters to that cool kid, aloof type so adding in a product that hypes up le ganj’ makes perfect sense from a branding POV. But! Their whole base line for infusing this mascara with cannabis would make you pick up a tube.

According to Milk, “Conditioning hemp-derived cannabis oil fuses heart-shaped fibers to lashes for thickness without the fallout. The hydrating formula also fills the hollow fibers for a double dose of volume.” They also used it as a binding tool in order to make the product totally vegan by not using beeswax.

UPDATE

2.12.19

I tried it for myself! This is the Ambary Gardens Deep Rub. It isn’t a beauty product. It did, however, prove to me all the benefits of the anti-inflammatory goodness of CBD oil. My maternal lineage is cursed to have bad right knee. Not kidding. My grandmother, my mother, and my aunt all have a bad right knee. Mine was activated when I turned 27 and it’s an inherited trait I’d like to speak to the manager about. My grandmother’s knee pain can be intolerable at times so my sister found this ointment that can help. After convincing my grandmother, that, no, she will not get high off of the ointment or addicted to the weed she used it. She said it has been helping her! My knee pain is intolerable when I am menstruating (anyone else get joint pain from pms?). I tried the ointment and I felt like I could literally do jumping jacks with confidence. I had my 26 year old knee back and it was beautiful!

7 Concealers That Prove 2019 is the Year of Hidden Eye Bags

Danyelle Valentin // @bufferingbetty

BRB, off perfecting that under-eye triangle.

If 2017 was the year of color corrector, and 2018 was the year of blush, I’m left wondering what 2019 will be crowned the year of. My prediction is concealer! Since Tarte’s concealer, Shape Tape, lined beauty counters and brightened the under eye hallows of beauty lovers across the land, competing brands have been trying their best to topple the top-selling, top-rated, cherry-on-top concealer. Even Tarte! After Shape Tape, an Ulta exclusive, was a major success, Tarte released their Creaseless Concealer. It wasn’t a smash hit like Shape Tape. Nothing has been. But a new year means new beauty launches. Some of the most highly anticipated launches are concealers. Here are a few that will have you clicking ‘add to cart.’

Scorpio, it is unlike you to hold back your thoughts on any matter. If you have found that lately you seem stuck and tied up in your own words, take a new approach. It’s your straightforward nature that makes you stand out. It’s time to be bolder. While a clean line of a cut crease may be a popular look, it doesn’t make the cut for a Scorpio. This No Frizz Hair Care Line is your First Defense Against Humidity

Danyelle Valentin // @bufferingbetty

When your love for big hair turns ironic.

With frizzy hair, even the slightest presence of moisture in the air ruins your low slick back ponytail into a swirly mess.

Don’t doubt for a minute that I don’t love every inch of my hair. I can manipulate it into anything. There are certainly cute frizzy hair days.

But THIS is not one of them so these are the days that we need to embrace the power good hair care.

The first step for managing frizzy hair is identifying why your hair swells 3x it’s actual size in the first place. Frizzy hair means that your hair is on the dryer side; regardless of your hair type. For me, it’s, 1, I was born this way, and 2, using hot tools in my hair. Using heated styling tools to smooth my frizz just creates more of what I’m trying to, not eliminate, but keep well below Hagrid levels. I also shower with hot water. I know it’s bad for my dry skin and hair but I can’t help it!!!!

So, if you were born this way, the first thing you need to do is ACCEPT and EMBRACE your frizzy hair. Almost nothing can correct nature. There are dozens of ways to style your hair where frizz adds an exciting element of beauty. We see it on the runway all the time!

Note: I wouldn’t be mad if my hair looked like that every day. And I do mean that big too!

I also need to accept that I am damaging my hair with heat and products that dry it out -only making it frizzier. What are your habits that effect your hair?

Frizzy hair be like 0 to GODDAMN in 5 seconds. You’ll think you’re going to have a great natural hair day and POOF. Your hair had other plans but you were already in your car on your way to happy hour and now you have to enlist ‘the bun’ to save you. -Just me?

To keep your hair fierce rather ferocious, prepping your hair starts in the shower. The Living Proof No Frizz shampoo and conditioner left me blown away the first time I used it. It has continued to impress me every time I wash my hair. I’m on my third set!!! Do you remember how nice you’re hair felt before your discovered hot tools and styling products? Or do you feel slightly jealous of your baby cousins’ hairs because they just look so healthy and untainted by the pressures of adulthood? Yeah. that's how good my hair feels and looks with this combo.

Most ‘no frizz’ hair care lines I’ve tried leave my hair weighed down. I. Hate. Flat. Hair. The Living Proof combo is everything. My hair looks and feels so healthy. My wavy hair texture is at peak waviness when I let it air dry -even with no added product. Are you paying attention! NO ADDED PRODUCT! I get compliments on my hair when I use this shampoo and conditioner.

On second and third (+ so on) day hair, I use the Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream. It brings down the frizz to a socially acceptable level. I keep mini ones with me at all times! One in my purse and one chills in the cup-holder of the front seat of my car. It doesn’t act as a smoothing oil which works to eliminate all signs of frizz. Like I said, I love my frizzy hair. I just like to not walk around looking like I haven’t brushed my hair in 3 months. The styling cream gives more definition to my waves without making my hair heavy.

No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream

This next product is not part of the Living Proof line BUT it is a ‘holy grail’ level product for keeping my hair in shape. The Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Balm-to-Oil Pre Shampoo Masque -ya need it. Just to keep it simple; you need it. Damage in my hair always shows on the ends. This masque makes my hair look like I just got it cut. It’s boujee salon level excellent that you can do at home. I would just avoid using it directly before styling your hair because it is so rich that your hair will just fall flat.

Have I told you how I’ve crowned myself as the Sample Queen -because I have. You can be too! Try all of the Living Proof products I wrote about in this travel kit they put together.

Living Proof
No Frizz Smoothing & Frizz Fighting Travel Kit

For the days when the frizz factor will not be controlled. always keep some sort shield with you. It could be a hat, headband or scarf. For me it’s at least 4 bobby pins to create a secure bun and a hair tie for when I can’t be bothered. Frizz happens fast. Don’t let them catch you slippin’!

From the moment I emerged into this life, I have had frizzy hair. As a child, my mom saturated my sisters’ and my hair with Infusium leave in conditioner. In middle school, to control the frizz, I coated my hair in Pantene Pro V mousse or any brand gel -I had one that tinted my hair blue and made it as hard as plastic. I’d pull my hair into a high side ponytail with a scrunchie! In high school, I discovered the blow dryer but only used it the night before school to “let the frizz settle overnight” -I still do this sometimes.

I fully embrace my hair! I often try something new: blonde, blue, purple, bob, bangs, braids. and all of the things!

If all else fails, live in your Diana Ross- big hair, don’t care-moments!

Beauty Horoscope: Virgo 2018

Virgo (Aug. 23 - Sept. 22)

Virgo, it is fitting that your season begins just as the back-to-school vibes set in. August ends as you prep + organize to meet your goals. Even if you’re no longer a formal student, you still love the ‘fresh start’ September gives. A Virgo is a life long pupil. Because of your ability to create a master plan full of detailed steps that will lead you to achieve all that you discipline yourself to have, there isn’t much that can stop a Virgo. Except for your obsession with perfection. Don’t get so trap by perfecting the small steps that you push away the goal. It is a distracting defense mechanism and you know it. Mod make up the 60s brought all of the attention to the eyes; widening them by drawing attention to dramatized creases and a dropped lower lash line or painted on lower lashes. Think Twiggy’s doe-eyed gaze that was also sultry. Embrace your creativity, open your eyes, and don’t forget where your journey is going to lead you. Never forget that you have vision.

The Ace Edit - August 2018

We are officially halfway through Summer and the real heat has yet to hIt New York City. I’ve recently had to make some beauty/lifestyle changes to adjust to these dog days of summer.

MAKE PLAY

We all know I’ve been barefaced most of the summer, slathering nothing but SPF on my face. Just because I’ve been minimal doesn’t mean I’m boring. I do like to play. What I live for is a good base. Lately Fenty Pro Filt’r Foundation has been supreme. just a few dots here and there and blended well. I even use foundations as a tinted moisturizer. The shade 240 just matches my skin perfectly and that is rare. I just want to enhance my natural glow honey. Once you find the perfect base everything else falls into place. For eyes , the Natasha Denona “Camel” palette is an everyday dream, no one’s shadow formula can compete with hers. For fun colors and shimmers I do live for Colourpop, I’m like an OG fan since the days of “Bae” and “Rex”. I’m not really wild with bold color yet I still like to play around with it. With Colourpop I’m not spending major coin but the quality of product is superb!

Curls Curls Curls Curls… Curls I Do Adore

I unexpectedly went natural. I didn’t plan on it, it just happened during a dark time last year. Stress and Depression made my hair falling out in little clumps. I went into hiding for 7 months, just coming out here and there. Since I wasn’t going anywhere except work, I didn’t feel the need to do my hair anymore. I had stopped putting high heat and/or chemicals on my hair and just washing, rinsing and using hair oils and a hair gel that is free of shitty chemicals to slick my hair back and lay down my baby hurrs.  I also started cutting it more often which has been aiding in my hair growth. You know how they say you have to fall in order to rise up. Taking those months and having time to myself allowed my hair to be repaired and for the texture to improve and for my strands to become thicker and my curls... well,  actually becoming curls again. For The first time ever, I can say that I unapologetically love my hair.

SILKY AF

The struggling battle with my Keratosis Pilaris is ongoing and I’m looking for new products everyday to get it under control. Currently it has been super uncomfortable in this heat. Frank Body came all the way through with their Coconut Body Balm. My Skin Soaks it all up while leaving me with a silky gleam.

The skin on my face has been silky smooth thanks to Drunk Elephant’s T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial. Smoothing out my texture and renewing my skin leaving me with a pretty perfect radiance. I use Glossier’s Solution for daily exfoliation, while using this treatment once a week or bi weekly. IT IS CRUCIAL THAT YOU ALWAYS FOLLOW UP ANY PRODUCT CONTAINING AHA/BHA WITH SUNSCREEN!

Vital Beauty

A good night’s sleep can actually set you up for a much more positive day. It all begins with preparations like investing in the right sheets (Find out if you’re a hot or cold sleeper… it has helped me out in finding the perfect material for me to snooze in). I’m a hot sleeper so cotton percale sheets from Parachute and Brooklinen have been amazing. Plus, the less that I sweat at night, the less breakouts I wake up with. I prefer my sheets in a calming shade and/or clean, uncomplicated prints.

Setting up the perfect nighttime routine, from using a soothing lavender body wash, a dreamy bath bomb, a drop of Sunday Riley’s Luna Sleeping Night Oil to a relaxing cup of té de manzanilla.

Clean, sleek PJs make me so excited for bed. I love bralettes  and sleep shorts from Aerie, They are affordable and make me so excited to get ready for bed. Preparing for bed makes me look forward to getting some rest and waking up more positive, motivated and ready to take on the day.

GOALS

I Love Starting fresh. It makes me feel like I can achieve anything. I’m entering a new chapter with a new job and with it I want to just start fresh from the inside out. TRACKING MY WATER INTAKE BECAUSE DEHYDRATION IS REAL EATING CLEAN AND HEALTHY. COMPLETELY CLEANSING MY BODY AND FILLING IT WITH NUTRIENTS. Taking my daily vitamins, being active, even if its the bare minimum. Let me clarify, This isn’t about size. Slender, Pudgy, Plus… You can actually be healthy at any size. You don’t have to be skinny to be considered healthy (Have you seen Ashley Graham, Iskra Lawrence, Jessamyn Stanley?) Just being pro active in your life regardless of the number on the scale or on your jeans. Taking action and making healthier choices that are perfect for YOU, so that YOU can be the best and healthiest that you can be and most importantly… HAPPY.

IRL Makeup Test: Lip Palette

@bufferingbetty

Testing form over function

An IRL Makeup Test means taking beauty products, makeup trends, routines, etc. off of social media and bringing it into your real life.

Ya'll I'm a Virgo and practicality is the name of the game. There are a few beauty products on the market that seem like great ideas but lack all form of function -like loose powders of any type. I’m sorry, but you know having to hold your breath during application so it does not blow all over your vanity and clothes while praying you don't drop the jar causes stress-induced gray hair. Just press the powder.

The one type of product that seems totally non-functional to me is a lip palette. Of course, lip palettes are perfect for traveling makeup artists but what about for a traveling Danyelle? In using a lip palette, am I expected to concoct a color and then travel with the whole palette in my bag all day while trying to remember which 4 colors and their respective ratios I mixed to then blend together all over again so I can re-apply the color after devouring brunch. AND PACK A BRUSH TO APPLY IT. Nah. It just seems ridiculous. Sure, I could just wear one color but who does that.

My test subject is the BH Cosmetics’ lipstick palette, Nude Lips To Go, which, incidentally, is exactly what I am seeking to know: will this palette actually be ‘to go.’ The palette includes 6 shades of a rosey, plummy, and peachy tones of lipsticks that could work as a nude for a wide range of skin tones. There is a creme finish to these pigmented panned lipsticks. The shades don’t have a ton of longevity but wear down to a stunning stain on the lips. It’s actually my favorite thing about these colors.

The palette comes with lip brush that sits right inside the palette to get you out the door. Or so it wanted to be. The brush is tragic. Brushes that are included in a palette have a reputation for being of low quality and probably just a way to increase the price tag of a product. In the case of the BH Cosmetics Nude Lips To Go palette, it is a pretty spot on summation. All it did was leave my lipstick patchy and streaky. It isn’t the formula of the lipstick or my amateur application because when I used my lip brush, which also happens to be from BH Cosmetics, the lipstick went on like butter. Oh and the best part - it left little hairs coated in lipstick standing in spikes all over my lips. It was gross

I chose to wear the darkest shade in the palette. It isn’t nude on me but I just LOVED the color. Look at me feeling myself in this blurry selfie putting my dark circles on display asking for a nap. Yes, girl!

The lip palette is small. It fit in my makeup bag with no problem. It’s takes up no more space than a compact mirror. Since this product is ‘to go,’ I think that it should have come with a mirror. I would have preferred a mirror than the hot mess of a brush it came with. The packaging doesn’t close very tightly so I kept my fingers crossed that It wouldn’t pop open and make a mess of my bag. It didn’t!

It took the palette with me to a self love brunch where we had some of our merch for sale!

Meetpepperb Shop

This is a picture of how the lipstick looked after about 3hrs and a mimosa. It rubbed off on the center of my lips so I reapplied the lipstick.

The little gold lip brush is not the lip brush that came with this palette but I was not going to use the one that did ever again. After the first time I reapplied the lipstick, I noticed how messy this whole experience was gong to be. Even when I cleaned off the excess product from the brush before putting it back in the palette, there was still just smears of lipstick everywhere.

After brunch, it was time to reapply again. Shout out to me for yet another blurry selfie featuring a dirty mirror. I have way more confidence using a lip brush when I’m in the controlled environment of my vanity with my magnified, lighted mirror than I do in a single stall, poorly lit bathroom. I really didn’t like how messy the palette was getting. I was the only one using it but the smears of lipstick and the sticky brush just made me think of all the bacteria that could be collecting in the pans. I found myself wishing that this lipstick was just in a tube.

I cleaned most of the lipstick off with a tissue but it if you’ve ever gotten lipstick on anything, you know how lipstick just clings to everything it touches.

I am just an average biscuit who loves makeup. I’ve taken the palette out a few times after this event to see if I needed to get past the ease of just retouching lipstick from a tube. But I didn’t. Each time I had this palette out in the real world with me, all I wanted was the lipstick to come in a tube and call it a day. It is just too messy.

What other products lack function?
