How to Create A Hundred Dollar Skincare Mask at Home for Under 15 Dollars

Skincare with @oohkayla

Hi my name is Kayla and I am a skincare addict. My love for skincare began when I was dealing with a terrible allergic reaction/breakout that lasted months before clearing up. I call that time the Dark Ages, as I had become “ye of little faith” I found the internet going crazy over Aztec Secret: Indian Healing Clay.

Youtube and most online new outlets were all talking about this magical powder that would have your face pulsating and red but the results were allegedly outstanding, I purchased mine at whole foods along with some apple cider vinegar and the love affair began.

According to Aztec Secret “clay has been used for centuries, Cleopatra used clay from the Nile as part of her beauty ritual.” The website goes on to explain that the clay helps to remove harmful toxins from not only your skin but your body overall, in essence the mask is supposed to be the ultimate detox that can be used anywhere on the body, including hair. The mask helps with acne, cellulite, eczema, and frizzy hair, the only thing the mask doesn’t do is laundry.

The recipe calls for equal parts powder to liquid and recommends you don’t use anything metal in the process because it will mess with the powder’s properties.

2 ingredients are needed: the Indian Healing Clay and you can use either apple cider vinegar or water, and it is recommended that water be used for “sensitive skin”. I personally only use the apple cider vinegar option and I have sensitive dry skin. Some articles tell state there isn’t a difference between using water or apple cider vinegar (ACV), but I disagree. I felt the mask was way more effective when using the ACV.

If you haven’t jumped on the ACV trend, the acid in the product helps to remove dead skin, possess some anti-bacterial properties and overall helps to create a pH balance. In addition this is a product that can be used from head to toe and also consumed to help you from the inside out.

In my personal experience I use the mask anytime I want a really strong detoxifying/smoothing mask. My pores are always smaller, cleaner, smoother and subtle after using it. This is by far one of my all-time favorite masks. Once I make mix it up I apply it with a brush to make sure application is even and let the magic begin. This lovely DIY mask is beyond affordable and the Aztec Healing Clay lasts for a long time, the clay comes in a large container with a great amount of product. For under $15 you can get a 1lb of product!

DUPE ALERT!  This mask compares to the Glamglow Supermud Clearing Treatment mask which varies in price based on size. The biggest size is 3.5oz and is $99!! That is about 5x smaller than the Aztec Healing Clay.  Although I love both masks I would recommend everyone try the Aztec Healing Clay.

Guerlain Météorites Baby Glow

Sephora for $54

1 oz.

This is a story about being in love and then falling out of love.  It happened because of one photograph.  But before I get to the traumatic parts I want to tell you why this product was at first the love of my life.  I was absolutely enamored by the Guerlain Météorites Baby Glow when I first tested it out.  First, the packaging was gorgeous and gave me warm, Spring vibes.  The soft pink was aptly chosen for the airless squeezable tube (with pump) in lieu of the advertised name, ‘Baby Glow’ – which had me a little skeptical at first, I won’t lie. It’s a glamorous BB cream, a low maintenance version of foundation, which is right up my alley.  I was so eager to try this out on my face after testing it on my hand and noticing how beautiful it looked. It blended and left a gorgeous illumination without the glitter as one might expect from a product that advertises themselves as a ‘Glow’. It felt like pure luxury on my face; from Guerlain’s signature violet scent, to the silky smooth application of the formula – I thought I found “The One”.  It felt like pure opulence to put this on my face, which made me feel so good.  The formula was hydrating and gave me a nice finish, covering most imperfections and smoothing out my skin.  This formula is a one and done – a moisturizer, primer and tinted moisturizer.  Personally, I continued to do my normal routine because I trust my Too Faced Primer to really hold my makeup all day without separation.  I loved how lightweight the formula is while leaving a matte look to my skin.  Well … my love soon turned to dismay when I realized how greasy my face turned by midday. I was under the impression this BB cream was giving me a GLOW not a grease bucket vibe. Like I mentioned before, when I first applied it, the illumination was so flattering and multidimensional that it hid my flaws.  But after a few days of trying different ways to wear, I had  that moment of realization when you’re dating someone new and they do something minor to make you reconsider EVERYTHING.  I didn’t want to give up so easily on Guerlain, I knew we had a future together and I was willing to make some adjustments to my routine so I could get the most out of this product.  Not to mention – it’s legit an arm and a leg, so I definitely wasn’t putting this baby back on the shelf any time soon.

After the whole ‘dewy/greasy’  thing I was being very cautious of relying on this for all day coverage, it was separating and was making weird lines in my face that I had to constantly buff out.  We were on 'ok' terms at this point when I decided to wear it out one night to my best friend’s birthday party.  Let's just say we broke up within 2 hours of going out together. I was mortified.  Guerlain Météorites Baby Glow embarrassed the F*** out of me!  Turned me into a ghostly GHOUL with every photo I took. The photos I took during this celebration were epic but my face was bright white.  I wanted to legit wash my face in the middle of this party I was so pissed.  I would rather walk around with a naked face than look like a mime.

I really thought I had been walking around the city looking absolutely insane and ghostly the last few weeks. That was the last straw with this fella.  The SPH in the formula is way too white for my skin tone and the back flash will always be very prominent regardless of what kind of finishing powder I’m using.  I wanted to love you, Guerlain, but I can’t afford this love/hate relationship! I also would rather spend my coins on companies who don’t test on animals….realllllly not cool.  Like men, there are way too many BB creams in the sea to be stuck trying to make it work with one who just continally shows their true colors.

#blackexcellence IRL At The In Her Shoes Black Women-Owned Holiday Bazaar

@bufferingbetty

The Black Girl Magic Event Of The Season

This past Saturday, Dec. 2nd, I had the pleasure of attending the In Her Shoes Black Women-Owned Holiday Bazaar in New York City. I got to meet dozens of black, female, entrepreneurs, bloggers, and people ready to support one another. They each came from a different background. Each woman had her own unique, "Why I started this business" story. All of them empowered one another.

Renae Bluitt was the mastermind behind this event that showcased the power of black female entrepreneurs.  She is the founder and creator of the In Her Shoes Blog and Crush Media. She writes,

“I’ve always been intrigued by other women’s stories: their “a-ha” moments, successes, struggles, and most importantly, what inspires them to fight the good fight when times get tough” (source).

This passion for story sharing inspired her to create her documentary film She Did That. The film tells the stories of 5 black female businesswomen that are shattering their industries. She Did That centers on Luvvie Ajayi: best selling author of I’m Judging You, Lisa Price: the creator of the brand, Carol’s Daughter, Melissa Butler: the creator of The Lip Bar, Tonya Rapley: the creator of My Fab Finance, and finally on Renae Bluitt's In Her Shoes Blog story.

Renae is really out here fighting for women! She is an entrepreneur who is not just focused on her own success. Renae Bluitt is creating pathways that allow the grossly neglected population of black women to be seen, to be heard, and supported as business women!

Read more about how, in her own words, in Renae’s blog post, Walmart Supports “She Did That.” & Ramps Up Supplier Inclusion Initiatives (a must read!).

Watching the sneak peek of She Did That was exhilarating.  The preview included part of the story of the creator of Carol’s Daughter, Lisa Price. It resonated with me. She shared about her experience of struggling in her undergraduate career. Price talked about her battle with depression; needing help but not having the courage to ask. From a vulnerable stage of her life, she found the strength to rise and eventually build a company whose products are easy to find.

The full documentary is set to release in 2018 and based on the short glimpse I saw, it is something that all goal setters must watch and study! These 5 driven women are an inspiration!

After the documentary preview and panel discussion, the Holiday Bazaar was open for business. Here are just a few of the things I found.

First, we have our very own Pepper B. doing demonstrations of how you can blend your skincare with your makeup for the ultimate healthy glow. She teamed up with Bloomsbury Square, a vegan skincare company, to give shoppers skin to envy.

Bloomsbury Square was founded by Niambi. “I delight in making products that let nature do what it does best: nurture the body and mind” (source). Using their Featherlight Cucumber SkinNectar with Clary Sage + Geranium, Pepper blended the lightweight oil with a loose pigment to give me the melted peachy highlight of my dreams. I was already wearing makeup and thought that applying an oil could disrupt my “I ain’t woke up like dis, I worked for dis” makeup. Girl. When she finished blending my highlight, I was ready to do some serious exploring at the In Her Shoes Black Women Owned Holiday Bazaar. And off I went!

"Vegan, pure, affordable products inspired by indigenous herbalism and healing." Bloomsbury sq

Very early in the day, I found myself being pulled in by the force of a sheet mask. A black lace sheet mask to be exact! Eve Milan is a skincare company founded by an esthetician who has 10 years of experience to draw from (source). Eden Gilliam designed these sheet masks to be hydrating without the use of oils. Most sheet masks make you look pretty creepy. Eve Milan’s The Lacial Masque will make you look mysterious.

"A 5-free skincare line designed to restore confidence back into your skin and give it a healthy glow without the use of harsh chemicals." Eve Milan NY

Next, I headed to our friends over at The Lip Bar. This company is the brainchild of Melissa Butler, one of the 5 featured entrepreneurs in the She Did That film. While there, I met a blogger who loves this company as much as I do. She asked me why I liked The Lip Bar so much. I pointed to this poster and said, “That image right there.” Loyal meetpepperb.com readers must remember back when I reviewed their signature shade, Bawse Lady. I basically fangirled. The imagery used by The Lip Bar is untethered.

On a wall covered in beauty campaigns, The Lip Bar’s vision is striking and magnetic. I was thrilled to see that their table was swarming all day with shoppers ready to drop coin on their lipsticks!

There was another friend of meetpepperb.com who was a vendor at the In Her Shoes Black Women Owned Holiday Bazaar. LIT Brooklyn is a homemade candle company founded by Denequa Williams. These soy candles are a favorite of our website. The scents Joy and Home were quickly added to my mental wishlist. Citrus scents give me life!

Jasmine Lawrence sought to remedy her damaged hair dating back to when she was 11 years old! (source). She’s a healthy hair guru prodigy! Lawrence created Eden Bodyworks. They had one of the most extensive lines of product to be featured at the Holiday Bazaar. They even had a range of products for kids.

Eden Bodyworks distributed a bag of samples featuring a new product line scented with Almond + Marshmallow. Included in the bag was their Split End Repair Masque, Hydration Serum, and Therapy Leave-In Conditioner. I don’t know how Eden Bodyworks took two very sweet scents, almond and MARSHMALLOW, and somehow crafted something that doesn’t suffocate your nose. When I opened the products, I was very hesitant to give it a sniff test. I feared the worst. But I was very wrong. It smells amazing! Because I just have sample sizes, I am very hesitant to give our readers a review. I don’t think I can give an in-depth review the way I like to. However, if you are interested in hearing a ‘first impressions’ type of review, leave a comment saying so!

“EDEN BodyWorks™ provides natural products that integrate wellness and beauty inspired by nature to restore and maintain the hair and body’s original design.” Eden Bodyworks

FInally, we come to Limegreen. This skincare line prides itself on products that are multifunctional. Multi Oil, Multi Wash, Multi Spray, and even a Multi Candle - it’s bomb, too. Aromatherapy that melts into a massage oil so you can calm your nerves and soothe your muscles.

While speaking with one of it’s founders, I learned that this company was born from wanting to help a friend in need. Her friend was diagnosed with cancer. Cancer patients are restricted to what products they can use on their skin based on the treatment they could be receiving. She told me that one day after work, she decided to pop into Whole Foods to see what she can blend together to help her friend.

From there, giving relief to a friend, bloomed into a passion project that flourished into a business.

I took home with me a bottle of Limegreen’s Multi Oil scented with lotus. How great is this packaging! There is prideful showmanship in the way the box opens up like a door revealing what’s behind curtain number 1. While at the event, I tested the oil on my dry-growing out-bleached blonde hair focusing on my ends. Did this oil not make my hair look and feel like silk! I was impressed!

I have since tried it on my face, just once, though. You will get a full review in the future. It’s basically Winter, so my skin concern, along with the fading of my golden summer glow, is dry, flaky skin. Mostly on my forehead. When I applied the oil, I expected to have to add an extra drop to my forehead because it usually needs extra TLC. Not the case! My forehead did not feel tight or itchy and the best part is that my skin did not feel sticky or greasy from the oil! While the oil is marketed as a makeup remover, I don’t really see myself using it that way because the oil is kind of thick. Which is great for hydration, but I don’t love that for cleansing. I will test it out and write about it for a full review.

"Through natural, multi-use products, Limegreen aims to promote a lifestyle that is healthy for the body, sustainable for the environment, and unifying for people of all backgrounds." Limegreen

There were so many more brands at the In Her Shoes Black Women Owned Holiday Bazaar. This event was an exhibit of the entrepreneurship of black women. Renae Bluitt shared a statistic that black women-owned businesses “generate $52.6 billion” (source). There was music, wine, artists, and there was even a proposal at the end! Congrats! Make sure you check out In Her Shoe Blog and keep your eyes open for the release of She Did That. Thank you for having us!

My Simple Solution To Reducing Redness

Written by @Twist.It.Tea

I never considered my skin sensitive but as I’ve been getting older, my skin has required a little bit more maintenance than usual.  I no longer have inflamed blemishes on my face, but there are some occasional pop-ups, scarring and redness that never used to be a problem for me.  It’s a little annoying having to go through so many different products to find the right one,  but I’m learning about what works and what doesn’t and the knowledge is invaluable. In order to combat my skin inflammation, scarring, redness and acne I started using Dr.Jart’s Cicapair Tiger Grass Cream on my face at night.   I reach for this product when I need a quick fix on controlling the redness in my face, and when I need a locked in surge of moisture while I sleep as well.  It's honestly one of my fsvorite products right now.   I love that this formula is thick and creamy, which is perfect for me at night because I wouldn’t wear this kind of formula under my face makeup. The scent is delicious and natural and leaves a cooling effect on your skin which is incredibly therapeutic.  But what’s even more therapeutic is waking up relieved of a lot of stress, because this product actually heals.  The ingredient that inspired the Cicapair line is Centella Asiatica, which Asian Tigers would roll around in to heal their fresh battle wounds (there was a really cute promo video on their site but I can’t find it anymore).  This stuff is jam packed with plants that help with vitality, and dripping with minerals like sodium, potassium and some other stuff that helps to make your skin look brand new and healthy.  When I wake up in the morning my skin is glowing, renewed, smooth, and hydrated – and this was something I noticed the first time using it.  For my nightly routine I do a little dual cleansing action with Bioderma Sensibo H2O and Murad, toning with Thayers Witch Hazael, eye cream, and I like to switch on and off between using the Dr. Jart’s cream and my two favorites; Lapis facial oil, and the Laneige hydrating face mask.  I do love to throw a good face mask in there from time to time and most recently I was using the K-Beauty brand The Face Shop Character Mask.  I wasn't a huge fan of the lemony scent it gave off but it was cute none the less.

I have combo/oily skin so I’m hesitant to wear the Tiger Grass Cream during the day because I do feel like it is too heavy for me personally.  I wanted something that would moisturize, hydrate and help with the occasional irritation and redness without feeling like I was wearing a mask on my face.  I love using my Lapis as a moisturizer but I’m always looking for an alternative to give my skin a break from natural oils twice a day. The Bioderma Sensibio line was introduced to me as a way to control my semi sensitive skin that was prone to redness and inflammation.  I wasn’t 100% familiar with the brand but I knew enough from the name that biology was heavily involved.  A company whose mission is to know your skin so well they break down the biological mechanisms to create products directly influenced by them, is something I can get behind.  I won’t lie, I had high expectations for these products, especially coming from Lapis Facial Oil, AKA the product that changed my life.  But also, what I was really looking for was a product that healed in the process of managing the inflammations.  I wanted a direct replacement for the Tiger Grass Cream.   First up was Sensibio Light, the moisturizer was formulated to “strengthen the skin's resistance to attacks and increases the tolerance threshold of sensitive and intolerant skin.”  It also helps with over heating, tightness, and discomfort on the skin which are more extreme symptoms than my sensitive skin issues.   I wasn’t crazy about this moisturizer under my makeup because I felt that the silky smooth cream formula left a sticky residue on my face.  It took forever to soak in, made my face greasier, and in the end I don’t think it ever really helped with the irritations. I would wear this product at night but it doesn’t hold the same weight as the Cicapair in terms of hydration and moisture.  Next was Sensibio Eye that had interestingly had caffeine in the formula to de-puff under your eyes while the hyaluronic acid and light-reflecting powder smooth and reduce crow’s feet.  I thought I would like this is replacement of the Milk Aqua stick.  Well to be completely honest, the 2mL sample I received wasn’t packaged the best and I feel like there is so much more product inside the tube than what I can squeeze out so my data is limited.  From what I could gather, I came to the conclusion that I have used better eye creams with more significant results including, that include reducing dark circles- which this does not.  Unfortunately,  I didn’t feel like this eye cream contributed to any major changes in my eye area. A plus was that the gel formula did not burn my skin but left a soothing and natural finish, which is important to me because I am cautious of putting eye creams near my eyes and contacts.   Although I am not 100% sold on this product, it may be better for during the day under your makeup but I don’t ever wear eye cream during the day because my primer takes care of all of that.  I love using my Laneige hydrating face mask under my eyes over night, I wake up looking so fresh and awake – especially if I know I’m getting to bed late and a little tipsy, this is the perfect hydrator.

Speaking of getting to bed a little late and tipsy, I will say Bioderma H2O is my absolute favorite make-up remover.  It is a micellar water which is a 3 in 1 product: facial wash, makeup remover, and moisturizer.  According to Google, and this Huffington Post article, “micellar water is made up of micelles (tiny balls of cleansing oil molecules) suspended in soft water. The idea is that micelles are attracted to dirt and oil, so they are able to draw out impurities without drying out the skin.”  PERFECT.  I struggle with finding a makeup remover that doesn’t completely dry out my skin, but also effectively removes my makeup.  I also love that is so clutch when I’m traveling and need to freshen up.  This was definitely my favorite product out of the few I tried from their Sensibio line, which I haven’t written off completely I think it’s just a matter of testing a few more out that fit my current skin needs.  I am happy with my skincare routine right now, I think it covers all my needs although I definitely need a new eye cream replacement that targets dark circles and lines !  My go to for all irritation and redness problems will be Dr.Jart’s Cicapair Tiger Grass Cream, I love how much I can depend on their formula to deliver and heal and make me feel so great in the process.

The Missing Piece To My Skincare Puzzle

Written by Twist.It.Tea

I have finally found a product I cannot live without. The product that will forever have a home in my cabinet.  Lapis Balancing Facial Oil-  thank you and I love you. You do things for my skin that I didn’t even know was possible.  You are exceeding all my expectations for a facial oil, and I thought you had tough competition against my former flame, Prickly Pear.  All I wanted in “good facial oil” was, pore reducing, skin brightening, and firming, along with healing some damaged skin.  I didn’t consider seeing results in less than a week but I was soon convinced Lapis could be the missing piece to my skincare puzzle.

This product was presented to me at an important time in my life as I’ve been struggling for a year and a half with my skin drastically changing.  And not only drastically changing but leaving behind evidence that turned into scarring and hyper pigmentation. I’ve never experienced skin issues in the past so these changes were very scary to me and I wasn’t very confident in reaching a solution.  On top of the visible markings left behind from painful acne, the redness never seemed to subside and the discoloration was becoming harder to cover up.  I changed my makeup routine and moved away from certain products and applicators.  That seemed to help for sure but the problem was still very much there and it wasn’t leaving anytime soon.  I was incredibly stressed out during this time, so my lifestyle wasn’t aiding in my skin’s rehabilitation but more so making it worse.  I was trapped in a vicious cycle and I decided to finally start listening to my skin and understand what triggers the breakouts and what I can do to avoid those.  One of the biggest triggers for me was dairy so I made the decision to eliminate it as much as I could from my diet.   for I admit I am still a work in progress because I love pizza and cheese boards obviously but the whole dairy ice cream thing had to go (coconut water based ice cream is so delicious ya’ll).

After finding the perfect “ingredients” for healing my skin, it was only about 2-3 months ago that I started noticing a big difference in appearance. I found hope in the Murad Vitamin C Kit.  The Essential C Cleanser and the Rapid Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Serum made serious improvements on my targeted areas while eliminating my break outs all together.  I was warned about the serum because of its contents and possibilities of it effecting my liver if over used, but I was so ready to see some improvement I put my morals to the side.  Well luckily, at some point my skin had reached a plateau and improvements came to a halt. Luckily my skin wasn’t getting worse, it just wasn’t getting any better.  Then Lapis came into my life, with its 100% natural, pure plant oils and vegan manufacturing.  Not only did it cover all the basics I mentioned before but my skin turned into silk, my pores are nowhere to be found, the redness has dissolved and the hyper pigmentation that the (now evil) Murad Skin Lightening Serum didn't clear up, is almost nonexistent.

I’m extremely impressed with how well healed my scars are and the balancing of my natural oils.  A little goes a long way with this product (the cost is justified), so I use 4-5 drops at night and 2-3 before my makeup application in the morning.  It smells lovely and natural, it's my favorite pat of the process.  It replaces my moisturizer but takes 10-15 minutes to fully soak into my skin.   I love using it at night with my Dr. Jart’s Tiger Grass Cream to really combat the scarring and tiny imperfections.  Lapis Balancing Facial Oil helps reduce the amount of sebum your skin creates, so my combination/greasy skin has reacted great in terms of balancing the oils in my T zone.  I don’t wake up with a greasy face and my makeup application stays in place and perfect through out the whole day with little, to no greasy feeling.  I am so happy with Lapis, my skin texture has never been softer, brighter or firmer – I am finally able to wear no makeup without being severely embarrassed by my skin’s current state.  It feels so good to have control over my skin again, by using natural products with longevity that I truly believe in as opposed to a hazardous and chemical ridden ‘quick-fix’.

This Website Could Help Protect Your Skin From Another Breakout

You'll never have to wonder if a product is going to make your skin have a freak out again!

Shop Smart Saturday is back and ready to save your skin from a breakout. If you've got acne prone skin, this post is for you!

Shop Smart Saturday is all about being an informed consumer. You read reviews. You track trends. And you don't buy any product without researching down a rabbit hole that makes you want to have a paleo-diet for a few weeks! It's the worst when you experience buyer's remorse on account of you not having known what you now know, ya know?

Skincare is trial and error. But there is a way to significantly reduce the 'error' part. Sure, you can go to a dermatologist and have a skin analysis to learn what ingredients put at risk of a breakout so you'll, therefore -avoid them. But we found the millennial approach -a website that does all the guesswork for you!

CosDNA is a website that analyzes a product's ingredient list. It individually ranks the harshness of an ingredient on a scale from 1-9; 9 being the worst on your skin for long-term use.

"About Comedogenic (Acne), Irritation and Safety
The value of Comedogenic and Irritation from zero to five, the lower the better (the less chance it will happen).
Safety index from 1~9, the lower number means this ingredient is low hazard. Unlike comedogenic and irritation, Safety is a comprehensive index focus on safety on long term usage, according to harmful report from CIR, RTECS, FDA and other related information. The purpose of the index is more inclined to assess whether long-term injury of skin, cells or the human body." - CosDNA

The website is basic and looks outdated but it isn't. It's also super easy to use. There are two ways to search for problematic skincare that I find the most effective.

The first is by using the 'Product Search' tab. I searched the Peter Thomas RothTherapeutic Sulfur Masque Acne Treatment Masque. It was in their database. Seldom do I find that the product I am looking for is not with in CosDNA's database.

The ingredients in the product are individually listed and ranked for safety. It's that easy! Now that you know the risk, you are in control of whether or not you can manage a skin breakout this week!

The second approach is by using the 'Analyze Cosmetics' tab. This is helpful if you tried the 'Product Search' tab and weren't successful in your quest.

This method takes a little more effort on your part. That said, it's still very easy. It's as simple as finding the ingredients list on a product page. Just copy & paste then click 'analysis.'

I copied the ingredients for the Fresh Umbrian Clay Purifying Mask from it's Sephora webpage.

CosDNA gave a rank of the ingredients. It even found the name of the of the product I was looking up! It's a tool everyone can use!

Your skin will thank you!

Customer Allegedly Contracted Oral Herpes From A Lipstick Sample From Sephora!

This is the stuff nightmares are made of!

We were blissfully toasting with tequila on a Taco Tuesday when the news broke. A California woman has a lawsuit against Sephora for allegedly contracting herpes from a lipstick tester.

Who is to blame on this issue? Sephora or the customer?

The woman says "other lipstick companies have proven methods of avoiding herpes exposure -- like individual samples or assistance from trained professionals" (TMZ). If you shop IRL at Sephora, you know that there are a bunch of employees floating around the gondolas to help you if you were to ask. You can even clean the lipstick sample for yourself with the alcohol dispensers that are at least a quarter of the way filled at each station. Where there also are the very doe foot applicators you use to apply a lipstick sample. Stil, should Sephora + and it's employees have been more attentive to clean the floor sample?

Where did this all go wrong? The writers of Meetpepperb.com discuss:

@bufferingbetty

Half of me feels bad that she will now live with this disease for the rest of her life just because she participated in the quintessential Sephora shopping experience of swatching. The other half of me wants to go in on her lack of common sense. When she uses a public restroom, is she sittin' or squattin'? How aware are you of the dirtiness of public areas? Hello! We learn not to share chapstick in the 6th grade! Ya'll know 'cooties' has always been code for herpes, right? What upsets me is that this lawsuit threatens the Sephora shopping experience. What if a lawsuit like this prompts the Disney World of makeup stores to take away samples? Don't take swatching away from me *sobs.* Leaving Sephora with stains on my hand from swatches too pigmented to for a quick cleanse to remove is a badge of honor. I'm spiraling. I've walked around a dozen Sephora stores that look clean and for all their soft glow lighting on products, NOT ONCE have I ever thought to put a lipstick directly on my lips! I've seen teeth marks on a lipstick before! This was completely a customer error. To the herpes totting fool who 1) either double dipped with an applicator or 2) put a lipstick directly on your lips -please be more considerate the next time you enter a Sephora. Also, self-care is very important so make sure you are doing just that. No hard feelings. Most of us know better.

Deanna

The recent article about the woman in Cali that supposedly  got herpes from using a lipstick at Sephora is a little odd to me.First of all, I have known for many years sharing makeup can lead to disease & infection so I don't do it.  I borrowed an eyeliner when I was in my teens and got pink eyes so that put a quick end to that!  Secondly, that is very hard to prove. She could have gotten it from someone she dated, her cheating husband,  the friend she loaned her lipstick to, etc.  It is next to impossible to know if Sephora's tester lipstick was the true culprit. My recommendation is to never try anything that the public can taint in any way, especially if it can effect your health!  Become a germaphobic!  You will live a drama free or in this case a herpes free life!

 Via @Oohkayla

I personally have never used a tester directly on my face before, but even if you were to use a q-tip or whatever the business offers you are still at risk. I think that any company that offers testers for customers to use at their own free will should have a sterilization process to avoid situations like this, especially since there are an abundance of diseases that don't have symptoms. In addition, I feel like that risk of it alone should be a challenge on survivor or fear factor.

I would argue that an extend you are consciously putting yourself at risk when using testers but overall it should be the company's job to protect their customers to the fullest extend, because without them there is not company.

Via @Twist.it.tea

Yikes. You couldn't pay me to put an in-store tester on my lips, but if that's how the woman from California who contracted HSV-1 from doing so, wants to collect her coin then sooo be it, I'm not hating.  But what concerns me is that I don't think this woman was trying to scheme on Sephora.  I believe she genuinely wasn't aware of the viruses and bacteria living on in-store testers.  With that being said I'm pretty disappointed in the fact that common sense was not on the fore front of her mind in this moment, but to play devil's advocate if you're an inexperienced makeup purchaser, you may not know how to clean & apply the products correctly if there's no sales associate around to assist.  Sephora can be over whelming at times, but never be afraid to ask for help - they're there to sell you on the product you wanted, plus 3 more you didn't know you needed.  But in the end Sephora needs to be held accountable 100%.  We put labels on blowdryers to warn of electrocution if we use them in a tub or near water ... the same kind of 'obvious warning' should go for sampling testers and the possible implications if the sample is not cleaned or applied correctly.  I'm not saying  you need to hire more  sales associates who can help in these minuscule tasks (or hint hint: maybe you do) but invest in more signage around testing areas that have clear written instructions and warnings against publicly shared makeup.

@acevalle

After reading about this I wanted nothing more than to disinfect my soul. I don’t understand how this woman feels she can sue Sephora when she herself tested the lipstick DIRECTLY from the tube, onto her lips. Is she too oblivious when it comes to cleanliness. I feel that the risk of using testers is more so common sense. She apparently is suing for “emotional distress caused by their failure to offer safer testers”. Sephora provides Hand Sanitizer and Alcohol as well as cotton swaps, pads and disposable lip applicators and mascara wands. They’re there to be used, and if empty simply ask a worker for help no matter how unapproachable some may be. Health over everything. While I do not blame Sephora for this incident, however I do feel that Sephora should halt letting just anyone who walks through the door whether wealthy or homeless, from using testers especially without the consult of a worker. Herpes doesn’t discriminate and that shit is for life. if you are in the know of your diagnosis, you shouldn’t be going to Sephora or any store and testing out lipsticks, It is YOUR responsibility of looking out for others. As for us, who are uninfected it’s OUR responsibility to look out for ourselves.

@Downtownpepper

(Above) The face you make after realizing you are the only person who has used a tester on Meetpepperb. I feel bad for this situation. However, I am a firm believer that if you don't know the answer to something find it. I haven't tried a lipstick but I have used testers in Sephora and thoroughly cleaned anything before using it. Most of the time Sephora is extremely busy not that this is an excuse, but why put your safety in someone else's hand ? I prefer to sanitize my own items. I feel better being responsible if something happens. There is google, we take time to research a lot things but why not research something that would prevent you from having long term issues. On several occasions shopping I've witness Sephora employees stop customers and request that they use disposable wands. I am sure they can't keep an eye on every single situation. As the shopper I think its important for you to sanitize your own items.

ON MY RADAR: Frank Body's Shimmer Scrub with a 50,000 person waitlist is COMING BACK and this time it's bringing some new friends along.

By: ACEVALLEE

Cult internet favorite coffee scrub brand FRANK BODY is re-releasing it's limited edition Shimmer Scrub and I couldn't be anymore excited. I was lucky enough to grab a shimmer scrub during it's initial release in early Spring 2017 and have been using as little as possible in fear of running out of this magnificent scrub. NOW THIS GLOW QUEEN CAN RESTOCK!!!

Frank Body Shimmer Scrub $19.95

This scrub is like a highlighter for your entire body. Made up of sugar, salt, roasted and ground robusta coffee beans to naturally exfoliate and buff your skin as well as grapeseed oil and vitamin to moisturize and make that glow dust (made up of mica particles, which is environmentally  friendly) to set into your skin. this scrub will leave you with not only super soft exfoliated skin, but with lingering iridescent radiance worthy of mermaids, fairies and unicorns.

This time the brand is releasing 2 extra products to make that glow pop ALL OVER.

Magic Shimmer Oil $21.95 (Although it looks bronzed and tinted, it is not therefore it will not stain your skin or clothing... YAY)

Along with the scrub Frank Body is introducing us to MAGIC SHIMMER OIL. A dry natural oil that blurs and perfects mimicking the look of an insta-filter. Made up of Grapeseed, Coconut and Evening Primrose oils to sink in and hydrate, soothe sensitive skin,  calm any irritations while remaining lightweight without any slippery residue. The Oil also includes Mica which the brand describes as "GLOW DUST". These gold and silver mica particles is what makes you shimmer and glow like a disco ball.

Frank Body Illuminator $16.95

Another glimmering gem the brand's releasing (which i'm extremely excited for) is their ILLUMINATOR. A highlighter for your cheekbones, nose, cupids bow, brows, décolletage... anywhere. Blended with jojoba seed, coconut and arabica coffee seed oils to heal, hydrate and get your blood pumping for fresh new skin cells to surface. of course tons of MICA which is the key to the glow in all of Frank Body's shimmer products.

Frank Body Shimmer Bomb Kit $49.95

You can purchase these glowing products separately or together as a set on FrankBody.com. As always for the US babes SHIPPING IS FREE!! Sign up now to get on the WAITLIST. The products should be available for purchase between November 1st through November 3rd.

Colourpop Is Coming To Sephora -Here's a Sneak peek of what's to come!

@bufferingbetty

Now we can ball on a budget at Sephora!

As if Halloween wasn't sweet enough, this year Colourpop, everyone's favorite affordable indie brand, will launch online and in-store at Sephora! They will carry some classic Colourpop faves and brand new goodies!!!

Sure, we're excited to swatch a Super Shook Shadow IRL -but the real craze is about Colourpop keeping their same low prices!

Well, mostly. But let's look at what's new first.

Then we'll talk prices.

The first is this lip gloss trio. The Feelin Fine Lip Gloss Trio ($18) includes three duo chrome glosses in Fairy Me, Obviously, Lay-Z. All brand new shades! The gilded cap is everything!

Next, we have the Golden State of Mind ($26) eye shadow palette.full of shimmer shades!

The sunset colors and the golden butterfly on the packaging are beautifully relaxed. It reminds me of what Colourpop represents - a sort of breezy ease of makeup with accessibility to everyone.. It's says, "You're here for fun and don't have to be a makeup expert to apply makeup."

Colourpop says that the price point hasn't changed.

In the case of the bundle of lip glosses, prices did slightly go up. If you were to purchase a lip gloss trio from Colourpop.com right now, you'd pay $15, It's true for their collab with influencer iluvsarahii. Her lip gloss trio costs $15; so does  the Can You Knot ultra satin lip trio, and even the Out And About ultra matte liquid lipstick trio. All of these trios are $15.

The bundle at Sephora is $18. Individually, an ultra satin lipstick, a lip gloss, or an ultra matte liquid lipstick would cost $6 each. Take out your calculator and you'll see there isn't a money saving gem with the Sephora bundle. So buying the bundle at Sephora wouldn't save you any money the way it would on Colourpop's website.

So you will pay full price per product that is featured in a bundle v. saving a few bucks the way you would on Colourpop's website.

What are your thoughts about that?

Here are a few more new goodies launching tomorrow (10/31)!!

Time to Take These Beauties Off The Bench: The Starting Line Up for Fall 2017

Black Up Matte Jumbo Lip Pencil in 21M ($22 from Sephora)- Not only am I LOVING this shade of an orangey nude matte, but I’m about to buy the entire line, tthe formula is that good.  The matte lip liner that dubs as a lipstick is my new go to. It’s easy to apply and my lips stay pigmented throughout the day.  Huge plus that it doesn’t dry out my lips all crazy.

Smith’s Menthol and Eucalyptus Balm ($6 from Sephora)- I have been using Smith’s lip balm for years.  I love everything about this little baby. A little goes a long way because of the jelly-like formula but I love the versatility of being able to wear it under lip sticks or stains when my lips are dry in need some moisture. Once the temperate starts to drop my lips are the first to get feel the weather so I keep one of these in my bag at all times because it really does the trick.  The minty freshness of the menthol is a nice touch too ;)

Makeup Forever Liquid Matte in Rosewood in 105 ($22 from Sephora): If Makeup Forever were to ever discontinue this shade I would have very, very, strong opinions about it, and also nightmares, because I genuinely love it so much.  Seriously, it is a beautiful mauve and the liquid matte lipstick formula is a solid 10/10, even when it’s been through 2 matcha lattes, an avocado toast and a spliff, my lips are still pulling through with the pigmentation all while maintaining comfort.  Shout out to the avocado oil and glycerin, and that’s what’s in the formula – not my lunch.

Black Up Lipstick in 28 ($23 from Sephora)- As much as I love a good matte … Black Up steals my heart with their Satin Finish Lipstick.  I feel so badass in this lipstick, I’m not going to lie. Pictured is shade 28 in Deep Magenta, but not only is it a killer purple but it has a beautiful sparkle to it.  It has the perfect balance of dark and mysterious but also fun and playful…it’s great for all day wear depending on your mood. This + my Milk Supernova Highlighter = perfection

Smashbox Legendary Lipstick in Inspiration ($21 from Smashbox) – I know this shade kind of looks like the odd one out but let me tell you how beautiful this lipstick is with the Black Up Lipstick in 28 + smashbox Insta-Matte over top … wow. A whole new feel to this too-bright-for-me lipstick.  Worn alone, bright fuchsia pink isn’t normally my style, but mix in a complementary color to give it some definition and I’m all game to experiment.  I’ll end up layering on lipsticks through out the night/day but this is a great base color for my ‘brighter’ fall days.

How To Get The Fenty Face Without Fenty Products (Drugstore Too!)

Fashion icon, actress, singer, Rihanna, has made her mark on the beauty industry with the launch of her own makeup line. All September long, the beauty sphere has been cheering for Fenty Beauty. Makeup obsessed shoppers can't stop talking about Rihanna's release of 40 shades of foundation. They have also just been going straight batshit for her highlighters.

The Fenty Face comes down to great skin and a banging highlight. We are so here for it. Should you run into trouble getting your hands on their products, you can still get the Fenty Face without one product from Fenty. Here's how:

Prime

Fenty Beauty's primer is all about giving the skin a natural radiance while blurring pores. To get the look of the Pro Filt'r Instant Retouch Primer you can use a blurring primer on your problem areas, such as deep set smile lines and pores on your nose, while applying a radiant primer on the rest of your face. Two primers -so extra, right? No.  It is how I begin my makeup and how I make sure my whole face still looks good by the end of the day. These primers have a similar finish to Fenty's.

Surreal Skin Argan Finishing Balm

Pro Prep HD Face Primer

Foundation

Think of Rihanna's most iconic looks. Her skin is always poppin'. She never looks cakey and heavy. Just blessed with skin that is naturally bomb af.  It is the same with Fenty's Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation. Soft matte, demi-matte, satin, whatever name you give it, there is one conclusion. Skin that is effortlessly beautiful. In Ri Ri's own words, "I want it to look like perfect skin, not like makeup on skin."

Fit Me Matte and Poreless

Glow To The Gawds

Trophy Wife. The highlight that has stopped the hearts of beam queens coast to coast. Fenty's Killawatt Freestyle Highlighters and Match Stix Shimmer Skinsticks are a wardrobe for your face. Badgalriri said, "I like to look at these Shimmer Skinsticks like I look at my clothes in the closet. Am I doing fun? Am I doing alien? Am I doing weird? Am I doing sexy? Am I doing extra? Am I doing girl next door? You choose." (source). Rihanna can pull off any look. We've seen her look like a muñeca in her cupcake dress and like Morticia at the Diamond Ball. The key to the Fenty face highlight is FUN. Whatever you choose, let it pull your whole look, mood, and vibe together.

Maybelline

FaceStudio Master Strobing Stick Illuminating Highlighter

Strobe of Genius Holographic Stick

Blot On The Go

Those with oily skin were the first to notice that the launch of Fenty Beauty didn't include something they rely on to ensure their make up lasts: setting powder. Maybe that is because a powder look is not part of the fresh Fenty Face. The foundation also claims to be "undetectable" (source) and a powder is usually a dead give away that you have makeup on your face - apart from gilded eyes and these other trending fall looks.  But some of us need a little blot throughout the day. Here are some products that are just as easy to throw in your bag to reduce shine as you clock out and head to happy hour.

Innisfree - No Sebum Mineral Pact

Oil Blotting Powder

What products are you excited to see launched from Fenty Beauty?
