Hair in L.E.S to DYE For: Interview Hairstylist: Tsunamimami

"Be young, be free and live life fearlessly.  What motivated me to pursue this interview is my love for people who love who they are. How could you not appreciate someone who is completely themselves 100% of the time.  This interview with hair maven Zoe is a miniature reflection of how she has built a cult following through being herself and working HARD as Fuck!.  Zoe's work is easily identified with her vibrant blend of colors and clean but yet eye catching aesthetic. If you haven't colored your hair looking at this body of work you might want a change." - XO Pepper.B

Tell me a little about yourself:

Uhmmm shit. This statement is always hard for me. I really don't know what to say about myself that could really make me seem fake interesting. I'm 25. I am a full time Hairstylist/small business owner. Born and raised in the Lower East Side. of New York City. Two years ago I decided to quit my job and work for myself and my career has flourished ever since. I love to travel. When I'm not traveling I'm at home with my cat Salem. I'm an artist, Psychopath, Witch, Aunt, Pretty good cook and Game of Thrones enthusiast.

Was being a colorist your dream job?

No, idk what my dream job was, Shit idk what my dream job IS.

How did you narrow down coloring as the type of hair you focus on ?

It just happened by mistake. I used to just play around and color people's hair for free. I like to paint so I applied what I learned in art school and such. Then i started getting noticed for it so I had to learn how to do it the "proper" way. I asked my friend Roxyy for a lot of help. She showed me a lot of the things I know and I just applied my own style. Ultimately I became really good at it. I treat each client as my canvas and I just make art.

What is the best and worst part about being self-employed?

Let's start with the worst, when you work for yourself or freelance in general. People do not take you seriously. It's annoying and rude as fuck. People swear you aren't professional and because I work from home I can bend over backwards take people at all hours. Do crazy amounts of work for nickels and dimes. That shit is annoying, but once u learn to deal with that and put your foot down there really aren't any more complaints. I LOVE working for myself. I make my own schedule and literally just do whatever the fuck I want.

What’s your least favorite hair trend currently? What’s your favorite?

Least favorite hair trend would have to be multicolor hair with colors that doesn't mesh well, there's no reason you should have purple roots with orange hair it just looks trash it ain't different it's trash.

Favorite, color melting. I love a good color melt. Also metallic hair!

What drink do you order at the bar?

Jameson Ginger, light ice with a lime wedge.

If you were a nail polish color what would you be and why?

Black, because it goes with everything just like me. I go with everything. Lol

Do you have any tips for protecting your hair after being colored:

coconut oil and protein treatments. They'll deff save your life. I like Aphogee's 3 step treatment or Aveda's Damage Remedy Intensive moisturizing treatment. GAWDLY.

What’s the biggest misconception about you?

That I'm a bitch, or I have an attitude. I'm actually one of the coolest people you'll ever meet. I just keep it real as fuck, and a lot of people can't handle that. People want you to sugarcoat shit and that's not something I do.

If you could have any other profession what would it be?

I took theater for three years in high school, I wanted to be an actress so bad. I almost joined a company too, but my shitty teenage attitude fucked me over. I'm actually also really shy and have major stage fright lol, but that woulda been cool. I also considered being an art teacher, a parole officer for juvenile delinquents or a zoo keeper lol

What’s the most meaningful take away you had doing hair in 2016?

That If you want it, you gotta go out and get it and work hard to keep it. Crying and pouting won't get you anything, and it's ok to make mistakes you can't always be perfect.

Favorite childhood hobby?

When I was younger I used to read. Read, read, read. I read a book a day. My favorites were Cam Jansen books. She used to solve mysteries with her photogenic memory and I can deff relate. I NEVER forget anything my memory is too bomb.

Who is your muse?

I don't think I have a muse lol, but I will say. I get a lot of ideas from movies that I watch. I'm a big movie person I love film. I've deff seen more movies than your average person. I'm always taking notes and getting ideas from old films. Like ouuuuu I wanna do this on someone's hair. It could be the colors on someone's skirt to the curtains in someone's room.
